243,000 Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week
Initial claims for unemployment benefits surged to 243,000 in the week ended July 13, according to the latest data from the Labor Department, up sharply from 222,000 the previous week and above economists' average forecast of 229,000. This number matches the number of weekly applications since June and is the highest since August 2023.
